    Description

1870s Stereoviews of Newport, Rhode Island. Card no. 1 shows the Casino. To me It looks more like a shopping center. Card no. 2 shows a hotel, called "Ocean House." These rare cards are excellent condition with mild soiling and foxing in the photos. But the corners and edges relatively strong. The photos show sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality, and they display beautifully. Please see all of the photos above.
Item 487140 ◊ 1900s Two (2) Stereoviews of Newport, Rhode Island, featuring a Casino and Ocean House Hotel
Unique and intriguing "1900s Two (2) Stereoviews of Newport, Rhode Island, featuring a Casino and Ocean House Hotel."    Both of these cards are part of the American Scenery Series, and measure approximately 6-7/8" x 3-3/8" (≈18 cm. X 9 cm.)
    The
    "American Scenery Series"
was a producer of pirated stereoviews. Sometimes  these companies pirated Stereoviews from amateur stereoview photographers, who generally shot the  original photos in the later part of the 1800's.   They issued many series of American, European and Sentimental views. For a pirate company their views are of good quality.
Another thing that makes these particular Stereoview cards unusual,  is that they both have advertising on the back for businesses.
    Card no. 1
shows the Casino.  Of special interest is the muddy road, and the horse and curricle parked in front.  It doesn't look much like the casinos of today.   It looks more like a shopping center.   This card was sponsored by Meade's Cash Dry Goods Store, in Spencer, Massachusetts.  You can see their lovely and historical advertising on the versa of this Stereoview.  I haven't figured out though why Meade's Dry Goods Store thought it would be productive to advertise to the whole world.  But historically it is very interesting.
This rare "Stereoview of the Front of the Casino in Newport, Rhode Island."  is in very good condition with mild surface soiling and foxing in front and in back.  It shows sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality.  The images are clean and crisp.  The card mount has light edge wear, with just a minor amount of damage to the corners.    Naturally these do not affect the ability to see the stereoview in 3D at all.
    Card no. 2
shows a hotel, called "Ocean House."  Newport, Rhode Island has been THE summer vacation destination for the "rich and famous" for over two centuries. In the nineteenth century, it gained a reputation as being one of America's most fashionable and recognized destinations of the North.  So if you couldn't afford to get away from the bustle of New York City, and go to your mansion, and rub elbows with the Vanderbilt's, maybe you could afford to stay in the "Ocean House."
While researching this photo we found a new article about a fire which completely destroyed the Ocean House in 1845.   They rebuilt of course and the Hotel in the Stereoview is the Ocean House 2.0.   Ocean House has been rebuilt since that time too, being much larger and having all the conveniences, which the 21st Century Guest requires.
And the back of the card?  It is advertising for Luther's … which specializes, in Lawn Tennis and Archery equipment, as well as all kinds of games and sporting goods to entertain the visitors to Newport,
    including Stereoviews
    .
This rare "Ocean House Hotel Stereoview"  is in excellent condition with mild foxing in the photos.   But the corners and edges are flawless.   The photos shows sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality, and it displays beautifully.
Although the research into 3D viewers and photos started back in the first part of the 1800's, the real heyday of the "modern" stereoview started when stereo-cameras became readily available to amateur photographers in the late 1800's.  And their popularity continued to the middle of the 1900's. It is thanks to these photographers, that we can take a 3-D look into another time … in this case a slice of like in Newport RI during the horse and buggy era.
A very rare and wonderful, "1870s Two (2) Stereoviews of Newport, Rhode Island, featuring a Casino and Ocean House Hotel.," and a great addition to any collection!!
